With the launch of the Xbox 360 console back in November 2005, we have certainly over that time seen a wealth of changes to our beloved system.  From Dashboard updates, to the new Xbox experience, Facebook and Twitter, Avatars and Avatar Awards.  We have certainly been spoilt and I can say with certainty that almost everything Microsoft has added to its line up has been successful, with the exception of Avatar Awards.  I’ll elaborate.

A few months ago, shortly after the release of Halo3:ODST, I was asked by an associate what my thoughts were on the game. In the effort of full disclosure, I will admit that I am a HUGE Halo fan. However, I do not feel that fact is something that should rebuke the various points I am about to make. At any rate, my honest reply to that question was "It's my favorite Halo game, I think it's the best one thus far." Now, I know some of you are probably looking at your monitor and thinking WTF?! Better still, some of you are probably thinking that I don't have the ability to review or critique a game based off of some false pretense that I am a "noob" if you will, at least in the terms of being a game journalist. To all of that (and more I'm sure) I ask you to hear me out before you start going nuts. I will explain how I came to such a "blasphemous" conclusion at a later time but right now I'd like to address something that has been on my mind.

The Definition

Objectivity is defined as “relating to, or being an object, phenomenon, or condition in the realm of sensible experience independent of individual thought and perceptible by all observers”. A more apt explanation would be the process of thought that is not influenced by personal feelings, interpretations, bias or prejudice. The antithesis of objectivity is subjectivity; the complete opposite wherein the process of thought is based on the aforementioned. A journalist’s goal, irrespective of medium, is to maintain a balance between the two. This balance applies to most all forms of reporting particularly in video game reviewing.
